One of the forgotten chapters in the story of New Order involves the group members' outside production work during the early '80s. In different combinations -- often including all-important input from A Certain Ratio drummer Donald Johnson (as Dojo) -- Gillian Gilbert, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris, and Bernard Sumner produced a slew of releases under the name Be Music, most of which were released through Factory. A unique idea - a compilation of all the original psychobilly/rockabilly bands that Morrissey's unique backing group have ever played in. Henceforth, you get The Polecats (Boz Boorer) The Frantic Flintstones, The Gazmen, the Sharks and the Nitros (Gary Day) Alain Whyte (The Sharks, Johnny Panic) and The Stingrays (Johnny Bridgewood).

Boz Boorer - was in the brilliant rockabilly band The Polecats, but could often be found playing live with The Deltas and The Frantix

Gary Day - On the rockin' scene, Gary Day played on and off with The Frantic Flintstones, The Sharks and The Nitros (who often recorded as Colbert Hamilton's backing group). He also recorded with The Gazmen, which was basically The Sharks with the addition of Morrissey's guitarist, Alain Whyte.
Alain Whyte - long time Moz collaberator and guitarist who was in a few obscure rockabilly bands before teaming up with The Sharks to record as The Gazmen, and then went on to play in and produce Johnny Panic and The Bible Of Dreams.
Johnny Bridgewood - one time Morrissey bassist came from the psycho/garage band, The Stingrays.

During the past twelve years of its existence, Radio B92 has traveled a long way. It was the very first radio station in this corner of the world to put diverse styles of urban underground music on air. Back in 1989 it was the distorted guitar noise of Mudhoney and My Bloody Valentine, hip-hop breaks of A Tribe Called Quest and BDP and the sophisticated house grooves of Mr. Fingers and Inner City.
In the years that followed, besides regular broadcast, B92 has been supporting Yugoslav alternative acts through numerous record releases as well as creating a lively club scene by organizing hundreds of parties which have presented both local and famous international DJs such as Slam, DJ Hell, John Acquaviva, Phil Perry, Misjah, Trevor Rockcliffe and many more.

Utopia Revisited was the first release published under license in Yugoslavia since 1991 and there is only 1,000 copies. The inner sleeve of cd contains a short story called "Utopia Revisited" by Matthew Colin, author of Altered State: The Story Of Ecstasy Culture And Acid House. Dedicated to all the Belgrade people who have hammered a spike into dial-jog at 92.5 FM. Radio B92 - founded in '89, still surfin' the waves.

This CD was given away with subscription to French magazine "Les Inrockuptibles". It was offered in issue 39 (October 1992). It features many uncollected b-sides. It more or less served at the time in France as an indirect promotional tool for the release of the "Best... I & II".
"I Know It's Over" is not a song but an extract of the interview given by Morrissey on 8 September 1987 to the magazine, during which he announced that the future of the Smiths was uncertain.

This was first release from Rob Gretton's label Robs Records. Robs Records was the dance-tinged record label side project of the late Rob Gretton, the ex-manager of Joy Division and then New Order. It was run out of an address right next to Fac 51 The Hacienda, the club Rob had been instrumental in establishing. New artists such as the Beat Club, Mr Scruff and Sub Sub (who would later become Doves) were quickly signed up. Also became the home for ex-Factory label industrial funksters A Certain Ratio (who released some of their best work during this time).

'Burning' was the opening track on The Whitest Boy Alive's album Dreams, originally released in 2006. Fortunately, the track still manages to sound fresh, with the guitar-driven new wave disco theme dished out in charmingly slack fashion, while Erland Oye's rich croon holds everything together at the front end. The B-side is '24k' by Morgan Geist, here played with live instruments and the odd synth fill here and there. It's an appropriate sort of track for The Whitest Boy Alive, who themselves were once an all-electronic outfit, only to switch over to that tried and tested formula of guitar, bass and drums. The Desert Wolves were a 5-piece pop group from Manchester set up during the mid 80’s In Manchester. In 1987 they released "Love scattered Lives" on the Ugly Man Record imprint, which received much critical acclaim at the time but commercially did not make much impression outside of their native Manchester.

The Line up at that time was - Martin King (lead singer), David Platten (Lead Guitar) Nick Platten (Rhythm Guitar) RIchard Jones (Bass) and Craig Winterburn (Drums).Nowadays Martin King and David Platten play in the The Vermont Sugar House.

The Vermont Sugar House are pure pop for now and then people. Some have called it shoegazery indie - an eerie cross between Nick Heywood and the Bachelors, others cite Richard Hawley and Badly Drawn Boy.

One of the earliest independent labels in Manchester following the impact of punk, but also arguably the most obscure over time, Object Music, founded by Spherical Objects leader Steve Solamar to release his band's work, had completely disappeared from formal circulation after he wrapped up the label in 1981. The sole exception to this disappearance was the Passage's earliest work, which LTM re-released in 2002. Six years later, LTM was able to do a full retrospective on the label's releases, covering not only a slew of individual albums but creating this overview, pulling together a variety of album tracks and otherwise unavailable single and compilation songs as a handy starting point for the curious.

Foreign Press were a band from the Manchester area and era of the late to mid 80's who dallied with the Factory label yet never signed up to their anarchistic style of label management, opting instead for some major name promotion and PR - this ultimately didn't work out, they released only two singles for EMI. "The Great Divide" was produced by Be Music (Bernard Sumner and Donald Johnson). Foreign Press (aka Emergency) had had a long history with Sumner through both Joy Division and New Order.

If you google Troy Tate all you get are pages of The Smiths links, he was the bands first producer but got fired before the album was finished, which is one of those things I suppose, its just a shame that’s all he’s remembered for and not his great music.

Info: "Love Rules" is Jan Gazarra's second solo album after "I've Come To See You Once Again" (Ladomat, 2002). As in his debut album, Jan Gazarra worked with various guest-musicians and producers for "Love Rules" such as Peter Kersten (Lawrence), Benjamin Wild, Alexander Polzin, Andi Maid (Kid Alex), Carsten Meyer (Erobique, International Pony) and Jörg Follert (Wechsel Garland). Beside his solo project, Gazarra also plays with Arp Aubert, the Stoned Eagles (12" on Mirau Musik in autumn) and in a proper rock band, Black Star, whose debut album can be expected in the coming year. Jan Gazarra has a knack for charming the ladies, which we learn from the very intro of the record. This rings true when the last note is played. The record is comprised of exactly ten such songs that cover a range from the dance floor hit "The Actress" over upbeat hymns to delicate gems like "Saint George Lullaby" and the John Lennon like pop anthem "Now". "Love Rules" contains many declarations of love, but one of the most beautiful ones is dedicated to Hamburg's quarter located at the central station, St Georg, where Gazarra lives at the heart of a busy music scene. In "Upstairs Of Social Hell", he contemplates the scenes below from his window like a dandy, only to drop his guard in the next moment and face us like a small boy in his late thirties, offering his most moving moments in staves, refrains and closing pieces that overflow like a dam in the rainy season. Jan Gazarra is a great post-modern songwriter who has brought us an album for people in love and people who look forward to falling in love again, because it promises the eventual return of the ever-changing.

The story of Paul Van Dyk and Inspiral Carpets: (from "Trance Europe Express" book) ...On paper, the Inspirals connection might seem to have been just a simple matter of serious wedge disappearing out of Mute supremo Daniel Miller's bank account and into Paul Van Dyk's pocket. Not so. Paul and the Inspirals go back way. When Madcunians were touring Germany in November '92 they called Mark Reeder, boss of MFS and an old friend of Martin Carpet's from Denton in Manchester.
Reeder got in touch with Paul to help him show the indie band round Berlin, and firm friendship developed. It's now got to the stage where they've invited Paul to DJ on their tour. We meet up for the nterview in the Inspiral Carpets dressing-room at London's Astoria, and there's plenty of mutual - but clearly genuine - back-slapping. The gist of it is that both parties respect the other's openness to what they do.
Paul's relationship to the Inspirals dates back to before the Wall came down, when he lived in Eisenstandt, East Germany. His earliest musical infatuation was for Manchester groups such as New Order, The Smiths and, later, the Inspiral Carpets - just check his all-time top five:

Take the jangle from the Smiths "William It Was Really Nothing", the guitar from Cocteau Twins "Lorelei" and a chorus shouting "all night long" probably from Lionel Richie and one or two other choice samples and you have yourself a party rock anthem called Joy.
The rest of the ep is for the most part average to good. Given the proper dj treatment and placement, Arabia and I Feel It are workable and capable of getting some results and surely to get some heads running with wtf! pasted on their faces. Forget Mrs. Blowpop tho, it's crap. (discogs review)
